Description

In this lesson, we'll take a look at how you can apply the principles of basic chord theory to figure out how to play a song by ear.

This skill is invaluable when you have a song 'in your head' that you want to play, but do not have the written music or chord charts for the song,

Assuming for a moment that the song adheres to the basic principles of chord theory, you would make a reasonable guess that the song will begin and end on whatever you choose as the I chord.

Begin to play and sing, using the I chord to accompany the melody, until it no longer harmonizes nicely.

Then, try either the IV chord or the V chord as the next option.

Continue in this manner, piecing the song together, as if cracking a code.

Make a note of the chords you decide on, and then try the whole song all the way through.

Does it still need some adjustment? Try one of the other chords from the "Most Likely" list. Chances are, the answers are right there in that short list of options.
