What's up, it's Mike from Guitar Tricks, teaching you "Workin' Man Blues" as made famous by Merle Haggard. This is a country classic with plenty of iconic guitar parts.

This song features two guitar layers. Guitar 1 is a clean electric guitar that chicken picks its way through some killer old school country rhythms and leads. Guitar 2 is an acoustic guitar that lays a solid foundation with open chords and boom-chick strumming.

The tune features a 12 bar blues progression with a cut-time country feel. After the iconic intro, the band launches into the verse groove. The electric guitar lays down a steady rhythm under the vocals, with the occasional fill to spice things up. The guitar solo is textbook old school country, and the outro bookends the tune with a killer lick to end it off right.

In the following lessons, we'll talk about cut-time, barre chords and open chords, hybrid picking, boom-chick strumming and some old school country lead guitar approaches. Tune your guitar down one half step to play along with this tutorial. We are in the key of A major, with a 4/4 time signature, at a tempo of 104 BPM.
