An F#maj7 chord is composed of four notes:

  • F# (Root note)
  • A# (Major third)
  • C# (Perfect fifth)
  • E# (Major seventh) - Note that E# is enharmonically (sounds the same) as F.

In this case, because E natural is the normal 7th scale degree for a F# scale, and to build a major 7th chord we need to ‘sharp the 7,’ this note will be an E# and the note name will not change to an F natural. Here's how you can fret this voicing:

  • Root (F#): 2nd fret on the low E string (6th string).
  • Major Third (A#): 2nd fret on the D string (4th string).
  • Perfect Fifth (C#): 3rd fret on the G string (3rd string).
  • Major Seventh (E#): 2nd fret on the B string (2nd string).

Finger Positions

Index Finger: Barre your index finger across all strings at the 2nd fret. This will get the F# on the low E string, and the E# (enharmonically F) on the B string. Middle Finger: Place it on the 3rd fret of the G string to play C#. Ring Finger: Use it on the 2nd fret of the D string, which should already be under the barre, but ensure it's pressed firmly to play A#.

Remember, playing F#maj7 and other barre chords requires strength and flexibility in your fingers. This will develop over time with regular practice. Start slowly, focusing on clarity of tone, and gradually increase your speed as you become more comfortable.
