Traditional feedback is made by turning the amp up really loud, basically, so that the pickups create a loop. To get feedback, you want input stages to be as high as possible. Therefore, turn the volume of your guitar up full. Then, put gain up full on the amp. This can make it possible to create feedback without the overall volume being incredibly loud, though it might not sound to good, and you still have to turn the volume up very high. I have a Boss OD-3 overdrive pedal, and this is great for getting feedback at lower levels, because it basically creates another input stage to be overloaded before going to the amp. By turning the volume of your distorion pedals up full, you don't need to turn the amp up as much.
