Practice them using your third and fourth finger with the first as the anchor. I always use the fourth (pinky) for standard riffs but sometimes you may want to hit a higher note that would be impossible if you didn't use the third (ring finger). If it hurts then you're just going to have to practice more, after a few weeks you should have enough strenght in your hands for this not to hurt... then you start on lead and the pain starts all over again;-)

Dont forget to warm-up first, it is really very important. Try touching the strings lightly at first then if your comfortable, you can now increase the pressure. always use the fourth (pinky) as much as possible, coz its the most relaxed position of the left hand. Unless your doing it on the higher frets, you can use the third. Just continue practicing....your fingers will soon get used to it. :)

Ya sorry man, there's no way to work around the beginners pain. :(

Enjoy it - it's your last chance anyhow.

Try the search feature on the homepage. ...course you have to spell "power chords" right. (power cords are those things ya plug into the a/c outlet. :)

I never practiced with my pinky. Especially on crazy licks I dont understand why anyone would use his pinky for power chords.

Personal choice. Depends on what you're doing before or after the power chord you're using. Always look for the fastest/cleanest way to switch to the next thing you're going to do.

I'm playing for 9 months now, i learn on my own and try to learn all kinds of stuff. The basic chords are no problem (execpt A, whatever i do, i need to go trough a lot of pain to get it right, and that doesn't go well if you want to pick up some speed). I recently started on praticing bar chords and that is starting to go too, altough, very slowly. But with the power chords i have a lot of problems, my fingers hurt like hell from them. Could it be that i simply press down to hard on them and that i should practice more on the placement of my fingers instead of strength?

Bobby Howe made a very interesting tutorial on powerchords. At first I was surprise to see him doing powerchords on the acoustic lol

This is going to sound weird to a beginner but once you learn to relax your left hand and your fingers harden up a bit the pain will go away, even though power chords sound huge they require hardly any pressure.

I only use the two-finger variants (When you play the root note and the fifth by themselves). They sound a little more uniform and a little less cluttered, I find (though I don't neccesarily use a ton of gain so the higher root usually rings out a little clearer then when you've got).
