Increasing the gain on the guitar signal to create a distorted, rock guitar tone. Distortion is included on most amplifiers because it is frequently used, but you can also buy specialist pedals to offer a favorable distorted sound. Some players prefer heavy, metal distortion and others like more subtle, classic rock or blues style distortion.
