Guitar Glossary: Whole step

Whole step

A space between two notes analogous to two frets on a guitar. A whole step up from F is G. Likewise, a whole step down from A is G. The majority of the intervals in most scales are whole steps, with some half steps built in. For example, the major scale's steps are whole, whole, half, whole, whole, whole and half.
