Truss rod

The large metallic rod running up the guitar neck. It helps to hold the neck straight, but is usually left slightly bowed. This can be adjusted to correct problems with action in some cases, but is pretty dangerous to adjust. It is a large part of the support structure for the instrument, and too much adjustment in too short a time can lead to a snapped guitar neck.
