Palm muting

Muting the sound of the instrument by resting the palm of the picking hand across the strings near the bridge. The closer the player's hand is to the bridge, the more the note is allowed to ring out, and the closer to the neck the more it is choked. Palm muting works for individual notes and chords, and is often used in metal.
