Guitar Glossary: Inlay

Inlay

A fret marker, usually pearl buttons, found on the guitar's fretboard. Many other types of fret markers are used, including blocks and even custom designs like skulls and cross-bones. The markers are usually on the third, fifth, seventh, ninth and twelfth frets, with a different symbol on the twelfth fret (often two dots). This pattern repeats for the next twelve frets.
