Guitar Glossary: Circle of fifths

Circle of fifths

A circle of the twelve pitches in music arranged by the number of accidentals in their key. The circle moves around by fifth intervals: C, G, D, A, E, B, F#/Gb, Db, Ab, Eb, Bb, F and then C again. It is arranged like a clock-face, and shows the relationship between the notes of the chromatic scale. It is therefore useful when incorporating the scale into songs.
