Guitar Glossary: Authentic cadence

Authentic cadence

A cadence which consists of a dominant chord and then a stop on the tonic chord. This means the V chord switches to the I (root) chord, which is the "strongest" way to signal the end of a piece. In C major, the authentic cadence would go from G to C.
