Good observation! This idea is also widely used in baroque & classical music. It provides a wonderful added depth & flavor to flesh out harmonies & melodic motion.
You can also use the common tone diminished chord idea of keeping the same root note of the chord or melody in a song & moving between the standard chord & it's diminished version. That's also used in blues sometimes to sub for the IV chord.
